Harquahala

Between Phoenix and California lies a vast, virtually undeveloped desert. This region of Arizona is far less explored than the eastern and northern parts of the state. The Harquahala plains feature hundreds of miles of barren, uninhabited desert and without a 4WD vehicle, we planned to bike across.

At dawn the nighttime chill was still in the air but soon the rising sun raised the mercury to over 100. The sun quickly burnt through the thin clouds and left us with little shelter from the searing heat. Soon after we left the paved roads a silence settled over the desert as everything that could move sought shelter.
According to the state of Arizona, enormous cracks had been opening somewhere out here due to groundwater depletion. These cracks grow up from groundwater reservoirs and then spread along the surface.
